Hot Spring (Air Panas)

This hot spring only a 10-minute walk from the monastery (Brahma Vihara Asrama), if you take the shortcut. Or drive six km east of Lovina on Jalan Seririt, take a left and travel two-km to the Banjar Tegal market, then a further two-km uphill. Motorcycle 'ojek' drivers or 'dokar' wait at this turnoff to Banjar to give you a lift. Fifty meters on the left after the market look for the Air Panas 1-km and follow the forested road to the end. After cycling up the hill, the hot water will be a great relief. You can swim all day.

Bali Barat Park

The 76,312-hectare (777-square-km) Taman Nasional Bali Barat, with its complex of habitats including forests and coral-fringed islands, is the wild side of Bali. Since Bali is such a densely populated, intensively cultivated island, very little of Bali's forests are left. To preserve a portion of the island as a wilderness zone, as a buffer against human settlements that border it, and as a resource for forest products, Bali Barat National Park in Bali's western end was officially gazetted as one of Indonesia's 10 national parks in 1984. The park today encompasses 10% of Bali's total land area. If managed wisely, the tourism potential of its adjacent marine reserve is almost unlimited.

Brahma Vihara Arama

Go first to Dencarik village, about 18 km west of Singaraja on the highway to Seririt. From the highway where the 'bemo' lets you off, walk two km, then at the intersection just before the Banjar Tegal market, turn left up the paved road. Climb another two km (40 minutes) to the hilltop monastery. Or take a 'honda ojek' all the way up the steep hill from the Banjar turnoff. Wear long pants or a sarong as you must be respectfully dressed. Entering the vihara, sign the guestbook and give a donation.

Gedong Kirtya

Holy objects are ordinarily stored out of sight in high places, but in Singaraja you can view sacred 'lontar' books at Gedong Kirtya at the East End of Jl. Veteran. The only library of its kind in the world, the 3,000-odd 'lontar' stored in labeled tin boxes in this small nondescript archive record the literature, mythology, magic formulas, medical science, folklore, religion, and history of Bali and Lombok. Many of the 'lontar' were looted from the palace in Mataram during the Dutch military expedition to Lombok 1894. The library was established in 1928 by L.J. Caron, a Dutch resident of the time. Pictograms above the gate show the year.

Gitgit Waterfall

Eleven kilometers south of Singaraja, off the dramatic road to Bedugul, is Bali's most spectacular waterfall, easily accessible at the end of a 500 meter walk past numerous pushy textile and souvenir sellers and peaceful rice fields. Pull into the parking lot, cross the street, then pay a small donation. Enter a narrow concrete path between a cement building on the left and compound on the right. A fascinating walk for botanists, wind through coffee trees, timber-sized bamboo, and a riot of temperate zone 'house plants'-King Kong compared to the dracaena and philodendron of the West. The path levels out among irrigated rice fields and at the falls are a restaurant, 'warung makan', souvenir shops, and toilets.

Jagaraga

Heading east from Singaraja turn right (south) at the end of Sangsit village on the road to Sawan. Jagaraga is four kilometers and Sawan is two kilometers farther. From Singaraja's Penarukan station 'bemo' go direct to Sawan so visit Sawan first then just walk down to Jagaraga. A number of temples are found on this road, all featuring effusive, cunning, and mischievous carvings A fantastic ride, with archaic villages surrounded by vegetation not found anywhere else on Bali. Jagaraga's architecturally extravagant 'pura dalem', one km north of the village, is dedicated to Durga. It features carved comic-strip panels of cyclists, Balinese flying kites, dog fighting airplanes, fishermen hooking a whale, a Dutch steamer, long-nosed Dutchmen in a Model-T Ford held up by a bandit with a horse pistol, and mammoth fish swallowing a canoe.

Lovina Beach

Laze on the beach and watch the sky turn red, yellow, and orange as the sun sinks behind the towering volcanoes of Java, which appear on the horizon rising purple from the ocean. At night fishing fleets head out in their 'jukung', luring fish into nets with kerosene pressure lanterns swaying and glowing yellow all along the waterfront. You can join them for a two- or three-hour late afternoon trip. Or hire a freelancer and go out on a sailing excursion, with sailor. The bay is great for swimming. Lovina's warm sea laps lazily at the gray-sand shore during the dry season, quite tame compared to the volatile southern coasts. Although a little dirty, the wide expanses of sand are good for sunning (especially at Kalibukbuk), and beach masseurs are available.

Pancasari

A vegetable-growing and service community of Pancasari, north of Bedugul, is actually located in Buleleng Regency just over the border separating it from Bangli Regency. The Lake Buyan Recreation Area is on the left as you enter Pancasari from the south. There's a very scenic walk around the south side of the lake, up over the saddle, then on to Lake Tamblingan to the road around the northern side of the lakes back to Pancasari.

Pulaki

From Lovina, travel the road west toward Gilimanuk through a relatively arid landscape of coconut groves and grape orchards. The administrative center of Buleleng Barat is the small market town of Seririt, 22 km west of Singaraja. At Seririt, turn inland for the road to Denpasar via Pupuan. Pura Agung Pulaki, large, dramatic temple only 25 metes from the sea, is situated 30 km west of Seririt (48 km west of Singaraja) near the grape-growing village of Banyupoh. Cliffs tower behind the temple surrounded by jungle and overrun by hordes of aggressive simians. Considered sacred, the macaques are well-fed by locals but always eager for tourist handouts. This important temple commemorates the arrival of the Javanese saint-priest Nirartha to Bali in the early 16th century.

Singaraja Town

A small seaport and the capital of Buleleng featuring tree-lined avenues, quiet residential perimeters, a wide market street, rows of bright Chinese shops, and horse-drawn carts amidst frenetic traffic. Singaraja is reminiscent of Java. Traders from all over Asia have called at the port of Buleleng since the 10th century, trading arms, opium and 'kepang' for fresh water, food, livestock, and slaves. Each group has greatly impacted the cultural life of the city. Singaraja means 'lion king', a name commemorating a palace built in 1604 by Raja Panji Sakti. The Dutch fought the powerful raja at a fierce battle in the nearby village of Jagaraga, finally taking control of the northern Buleleng region in 1849.

Singsing Waterfall

From Lovina take a 'bemo' (one km) west to Temukus, or walk in 30 minutes from the bridge in Kaliasem. At the 14.5-km mark turn up the dirt road and you'll see a sign for Air Terjun Singsing ('Daybreak Waterfalls'). It's about a 500-meter walk with good eating stalls along the way. Boys will show you the way to the 12-meter-high falls. At the falls, swim in the pool below while cool, fresh water cascades over you. The falls only run in the wet, at other times farmers may block them off because they need the water. There's a bigger, better, more isolated waterfall known as Singsing Dua on a path to the east. Swim here too.

Tamblingan Lake

A trip to Danau Buyan and smaller Danau Tamblingan has the feel of a mini-archaeological expedition. Both are contained within one vast caldera. A rugged area lying between 500 and 1,500 meters above sea level. Because of the scarcity of public transport, the trip is best accomplished with a chartered vehicle or motorcycle. There are two approaches. West of Singaraja, turn south at Seririt and follow the asphalt road to Munduk, which then runs east along the tranquil northern shores of Danau Tamblingan and Danau Buyan. For an easier approach, head south on the main highway out of Singaraja.

Yeh Sanih

To reach the quiet beach resort of Yeh Sanih, catch a minibus (17 km) from Singaraja's Penarukan station. This shady seaside spot offers an idyllic black-sand beach-a bit rocky, but the swimming is good. Enjoy wooden bale for sun-bathing. Yeh Sanih's main attraction is an enclosed natural swimming pool of clear, fresh, cool water welling up from an underground spring. Known by the locals as a recreation site since the early 30s, the water is believed to come from Lake Batur in the mountains-the temple near the pool is thus dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Cool sea breezes, tall trees, and the nice panorama over the Bali Strait make for a serene setting.

Day 1 : ARRIVAL Arrival at the airport, check in, met by our operations staff, then transfered to your hotel(On the way, you will also be briefed regarding the whole tour and its schedules). You are being given a whole day to refresh your self and make your self comfortable with your whole new environment and sorroundings. In case you want to fill in all your days with some activities, why not travel around and see the whole Denpasar and Kuta by using a rent car service found on this site.

Day 2 : SANUR DIVES After breakfast, leave your hotel at 07:30 AM, and head for Sanur - two dives (Sanur Dive. This dive is at Sanur Tourist Beach and for dives 2 to 18 meters depth. Here you will see a stunning underwater environment, including table and trophy shaped corals and sponges, with thousand of colorful fishes swimming in profusion around the reef.) for some great fun. Lunch will be served at site, and in the afternoon driving back to the your hotel in Sanur.

Day 3 : NUSA PENIDA DIVES After breakfast, leave your hotel at 07:30 AM, to Sanur Beach 1 1/2 hours by boat to Nusa Penida Island (Nusa Penida Dive You will be surprised by the white sandy bottom and crystal clear water of this dive and will enjoy the array of assorted fish, special sun fish and under water life found in this spot for some great fun). Lunch will be served at site, in which after overnight at your hotel in Sanur.

Day 4 : NUSA PENIDA DIVES After breakast, leave your hotel at 07:30 AM, two dives in Nusa Penida Island, different location to the day before. Lunch at site, and overnight at your hotel in Sanur.

Day 6 : NUSA DUA DIVES After breakfast, leave your hotel at 7.30 AM, drive to Nusa Dua for two dives (Nusa Dua Diving Site This dive is the ocean facing the Nusa Dua Resort, and offers and panorama of various species of sponges and fishes with richly colored corals that will satisfy event the most seasoned diver. Dives between 3 to 20 meters will be the most rewarding..), lunch at site, overnight at your hotel in Sanur.

Day 7 : PADANG BAY DIVES After breakfast, leave your hotel at 7:30. AM, drive to padang bay for two dives, lunch at site, after diving, drive to Tulamben, overnight and dinner at SAYA RESORT.

Day 8 : TULAMBEN DIVES + NIGHT DIVES After breakfast, leave your hotel at 8.00 AM, drive to Tulamben for two dives, lunch at site, in the afternoon departure again for night dive, overnight and dinner at SAYA RESORT.

Day 9 : AMED DIVES After breakast, leave your hotel at 08:00 AM, 1 1/2 hours by boat to Amed - two dives, (Amed. Located about 120km North - East of Sanur, with beautiful solitary beach and fully grown with anemore, gorgons and sponge, small to large fishes, make this underwater part of Bali. Ideal for beginners and professional divers.From the beach, Amed offers an excellent site for training dives. This location is highly recommended for introductory dives. By boat, Amed has a nice wall dive just a few minutes away. It is a fun, easy dive for everyone.). Lunch will be served at site, and in the afternoon driving back to Sanur for an overnight in your hotel.

Day 11 : MENJANGAN DIVES Early in the morning at 6:30 AM after breakfast, drive to Teluk Terima, 30 minutes by boat to Menjangan Island (Menjangan Island. Is located 140km North-West of Sanur, this small island is accessible by boat, and only 10 minutes.This area is suitable for all seasons diving where magnificent underwated vistas will surprice even the most seasoned diver. It is rich with all kinds of sponges, sea plant, coral, and fish which stretches for miles one end. The sponge underwater is stunning and filled with magnificent display, that will please any diver.This island have numorous different points to dive in for different skilled divers. Our Huts for you to spend the night in, are located adjacent to the beach club. All the beach side huts enjoy ocean views over a white sand beach to Bali's famous volcano, Mount Agung. Guest can utilize the beach club facilities which include a large swimming pool, water sports equipment, bar, restaurant, toilets and fresh water showers.

The unique design of the thatched roofed hut is inspired by a traditional Indonesia rice house or "Lumbung". Huts are appointed with King size or twin Beds, ceiling fans, airconditioners, and large glass doors which open out onto an intimate verandah perched two meters above a relaxing "day bed".

This package is designed to give Snorkeler a more deeper look at the marine life. Snorkelers can choose to go more deeply into fish identification, coral indentification, or to linger on one reef and watch the inhabitants.

Menjangan Island Snorkeling. Is located 140km North-West of Sanur, this small island is accessible by boat, and only 25 minutes.This package is designed to give Snorkeler a more deeper look at the marine life. Snorkelers can choose to go more deeply into fish identification, coral indentification, or to linger on one reef and watch the inhabitants.

Nusa Dua Snorkeling, The site is the ocean facing the Nusa Dua Resort, and offers and panorama of various species of sponges and fishes with richly colored corals that will satisfy event the most seasoned diver. Dives between 3 to 20 meters will be the most rewarding.

Nusa Penida Snorkeling. Only one hour cruising by motor boat from Sanur, this is one of three sister Island of Bali. You will be surprised by the white sandy bottom and crystal clear water of this dive and will enjoy the array of assorted fish, special sun fish and under water life found in this spot.

Tulamben Snorkeling, Located about 130km North-East of Sanur, you will drive through truly idyllic Balinese country side. On location, you will see the remains of a US liberty ship sunk during World War 2. The Wreck is fully grown with all kinds of anemone, gorgons, sponge and corals.

Snorkelers can choose to go more deeply into fish identification, coral indentification, or to linger on one reef and watch the inhabitants.

PJ's at Four Seasons Resort has the best pizza on Bali. Open 11 am-10 pm.
La Indonesia, JI. Uluwatu 108, offers garden dining and dishes from around the archipelago.
Next door is Depot Windy, serving Chinese food. Down the street,
Puri Lombok Bar and Restaurant, JI. Uluwatu 8A, offers Chinese, seafood, Indonesian, European and pasta.
'M'Mam, JI. Uluwatu 39B, has Indonesian, Chinese, barbecue, grilled fish and steak.

On JI. Bukit Permai, the road to Four Seasons, you will find Kakul Kafe serving Indonesian and Western fare beachside.
Nearby and stretching right along Jimbaran beach is a succession of simple beachside seafood restaurants. Coming alive after sunset, the restaurants grill the choicest prawns, squid, snapper, and lobster over coconut husk fires. The setting is unbeatable with the tables right on the water's edge. Choose your fish from the ice boxes, pick a table and enjoy. This is definitely a must-do while in Bali.

Kuta area

Kuta is a great place to eat. New places open almost daily and competition is fierce. Most don't last for long. The ones which do have great food at unbeatable prices. Seafood and Western dishes are your best bets. Or try Mexican, Indian or Japanese. The more well-known places are mentioned below, plus some promising newcomers. Ask around forthe latest "in" spots.

Made's Warung I on JI. Pantal Kuta, in the heart of Kuta, and Made's Warung II, Banjar Seminyak, (not to be confused with other restaurants of the same name) top the list of old favorites. A popular hangout for people watching and great food. Specialties include Thai and Vietnamese salads, prawns in chili sauce, squid fillet, black rice ice cream, fresh and frozen yogurt, fresh fruit juices, and frothy cappuccino.
Poppies Restaurant on Gang Poppies I is the other old favorite in downtown Kuta with a rather more up market atmosphere and menu. Specialties include fresh seafood, steak, shish kebab, as well as salads, a selection of Indonesian dishes and one of the most extensive wine lists on Bali. Advance bookings are a must during the high season as the place is always full. The same owner has another restaurant offering similar dishes,
Kopi Pot on JI. Legian. The second story has a coconut grove view which is now a rarity in Kuta. Try the sate or the baby shark when it's on special. Superb desserts. Open till midnight.

Breakfast

Mama's German Restaurant for homemade sausages, on JI. Legian, near the junction with JI. Tanjung Mekar.
Made's Warung (see above) has a breakfast special that includes fresh fruit juice, eggs, bacon, toast, fresh fruit yogurt, and cappuccino, all for $2.75.
Tebu JI. Raya Seminyak (above K Mart) do a fantastic a la carte breakfast with a menu that includes asparagus omelettes and smoked salmon scrambled eggs. Nearby Moka has pastries and light lunches.
Mamma Lucia Ristorante, JI. Legian 39 has a special breakfast for $1.75 and American breakfast for $2.50.
Both Poppies and Kopi Pot (mentioned above) also serve breakfast.
Bali Bakery JI. Raya Kuta 65 has an extensive selection of cakes and pastries and a full breakfast menu. A great place to while away a morning, reading the newspapers in AC comfort.

Coffee

Breakfast, afternoon or after-dinner coffee is a treat at Benny's Cafe, JI. Blue Ocean (end of JI. Arjuna). Service is fast and friendly, food is superb. Pancakes, fruit shakes, ice cream, and a variety of brews: Columbian, Brazilian, Balinese, and Dutch. Try their coffee with arak palm liquor.
Cafe Tu Casa JI. Padma next to the Casa Padma Hotel, is a fine place to relax over a cup of coffee. Open air and looking out over the street, they also do a good grill and exceptional pizzas.

Desserts

Once again, Made's Warung takes the cake with the best desserts in Kuta. Exquisite strawberry pie, cheesecake and chocolate cakes, as well as rum raisin and carrot. TJ's (see "Mexican" below) comes in a close second with their "chocolate di ablo cake."
Kopi Pot on JI. Legian has great lemon meringue pies and black forest gateau.
Indonesian
For a quick and cheap lunch, try Warung Murah, JI. Legian Kaja 85A, and Warung DJ's, on JI. Legian Taman 104X. Sample their tasty nasi campur, a combination plate of five side dishes with rice: all for 50 cents.
For a sampling of typical Indonesian and Chinese dishes try the night market behind the Post Office in Kuta or at the bend in the road on JI. Basangkasa. Open only at night, this is great value for money-good nasi goreng for under $1 and fresh steamed crab for about $1.50.

Padang

Everyone's favorite Indonesian regional cuisine is from West Sumatra. For spicy nasi padang try Suryajaya, next to the police station. Ten different dishes will be served the minute you arrive, all of it fiery hot. You're charged only for what you eat. Also ACC Makanan Padang on JI. Kuta Raya, across from Gelael Supermarket.

Chinese

Golden Lotus at Bali Dynasty Hotel, JI. Kartika Plaza, has the best Cantonese food in Kuta.
Lonny's on JI. Pantai Kuta.

Puri Bali Indah on JI. Melasti offer first rate Chinese cuisine and seafood.
But, everyone's favorite is Restaurant Mini, Jl. Legian 77, about 200 m north of Bemo Comer. Choose your own fresh lobsters, fish, and prawns to be grilled, steamed or stir-fried with vegetables. if you're allergic to MSG, tell them "no Aji-nomoto."
Indah Sari, JI. Legian 140, offers the same service in more up-market surroundings with prices to match.

International

For a real treat try Kafe Warisan on JI. Raya Kerobokan, Dine al fresco under the stars in this glamorous setting among the rice paddies of Seminyak. The resident French chef prepares traditional dishes from his homeland with specials such as the foie gras drawing crowds from across the island. A lighter lunchtime menu includes great sandwiches and mouth-watering salads.
On JI. Petitenget The Living room is a lovely restaurant in a quite magical setting, ideal for a romantic evening with a loved one. Candlelit tables are scattered in the large garden and cool music accompanies an eclectic fusion menu.
In the heart of Kuta on Poppies Lane 11 is Kori Restaurant and Bar phone, boasting both a fantastic interior and garden setting. The large menu has a host of western favorites like bangers and mash and roast beef with Yorkshire pudding. Try the giant seafood kebab for two and some of their reasonably priced wine to wash it all down.

Italian

Italian dishes are now found in almost every restaurant.
A favorite is La Lucciola on Kayu Aya Beach, JI. Laksmana. It's worth the drive and is a perfect spot for sunset cocktails. Beach loungers and service make it a great sun spot. Dinner reservations essential.
The pool restaurant at Bali Padma Hotel and Fat Yogi's on Poppies Gang I have the best pizzas in town.
PJ's at Four Seasons in Jimbaran has the best pizza on the island.
Lotus Tavern on JI. Wana Segara, near the Holiday Inn Balihai, has homemade pasta, pizzas as well as fresh, charcoal-grilled seafood.
La Teraz, J1. Legian Kaja 494, is a trendy rooftop eatery that visiting stars frequent. Zanzibar Beach Bar & Restaaurant, JI. Blue Ocean, at the end of JI. Arjuna, has pasta, salads, American and Continental fare.

Greek

Panterai Restaurant, bar and art gallery serves authentic Greek cuisine in very stylish surroundings. Try the excellent kebabs and seafood and wash down one of those sticky Greek desserts with the unique taste of a Greek coffee.

Mexican

Stylish TJ's, Gang Poppies I, Kuta, serves the best enchiladas and margaritas this side of the Pacific.
The nachos and salsa are great with a cold beer or try a frozen strawberry margarita.
Poco Loco , on Jl. Padma Utara, between J1. Padma and JI. Werkudara, has atmosphere, good margaritas and a roving dwarf pouring shots.
Indian
The Oberoi Bali serves the best Indian food, especially the chicken tika and the vegetarian food, for an upmarket price.
The Gateway to India on JI. Dyana Pura serves a wide variety of Indian dishes for lunch and dinner.
Try their famous Lassies. Warung Kopi, J1. Legian 427, serves good Indian fare with a buffet on Wednesdays.

Swiss

Swiss Restaurant, JI. Werkudara, i's a meeting place for European hoteliers. The honorary Swiss consulate is next door.

Japanese

Bali's most serious Japanese restaurant is the up market Yashi in LTI-Patra Jasa Bali, where chefs prepare a range of dishes from sushi to tempura.
Made's Warung also serves perfect sushi roll , yakitoi and sashimi.
Ryoshi at JI. Raya Serninyak 17 and J1. Melasti 42A, is air-conditioned and is open until midnight with sushi, tempura, robata and soba.
Hana Restaurant on J1. Raya Seminyak (opposite Made's Warung) serves top-quality Japanese food in cozy AC surroundings.
The miso soup is legendary.
Also check out the sophisticated Tenkai Japanese Restaurant at Hotel Padma Bali who run an excellent all-youcan-eat buffet on Tuesday nights.

Vegetarian

Aroma's Cafe on JI. Legian has been a haven for vegetarian food for years and continues to delight both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. The menu is extensive, the portions generous and check the boards for the ever-changing daily specials. Great drinks and dessert. The laidback garden setting makes Aroma's one of the more pleasurable dining experiences in Kuta. Open all day.

Fast Food

For the hopelessly homesick, Kuta has a complement of American fast food outlets: Kentucky Fried Chicken and Swenson's Ice Cream are in the Gelael Supermarket on JI. Kuta Raya, near the gas station heading toward Denpasar. They also have restaurants in Kuta Square. McDonald's have restaurants on JI. Raya Seminyak, A. Legian next to the Matahari Department Store, Kuta Square and in Kartika Plaza. Pizza Hut is also in Kartika Plaza. Most of these outlets will deliver but check first if this is okay with your hotel. Expect similar menus to those at home with some variations, such as spicy fried chicken, well worth a try.

Ubud Area

Ubud has an incredible variety of places to eat. The simple warungs serving nasi campur and satay are still around, but so is everything else. Today Ubud offers a choice ranging from American hamburgers and steaks, country-style Japanese, and sophisticated Italian pastas all the way to haute cuisine with worldwide acclaim. A few restaurants stand heads and shoulders above the crowd for the quality and the originality of their food. Those on a budget can find the local warungs, although they're fast being replaced by more upscale eateries. The following is a sampler of the area's better restaurants.

Central Ubud

Ary's Warung J1. Raya Ubud, opposite Pura Desa. The place to see and be seen. Nostalgic atmosphere with marble-topped tables and sepia-tinted photos. Creative menu with a wide range of appetizers and entrees: potato skins, Waldorf salad, chicken ranchero, and coconut pie. Extensive drinks menu, including wine and champagne. Sit upstairs and watch Ubud go by. Pricey.
Batan Waru JI. Dewi Sita (south of the soccer field). Best place in town for breakfast check out the ginger pancakes and the Florida lime pie! Extensive Indonesian menu without the fire (if you want it hot, request it). This is definitely Yuppieville. Opens at 9 am.
Bumbu Indian and Vegetarian Restaurant Jl. Suweta, north of the Wantilan community hall. The specialties of the house can be sampled on Saturday evenings with their vegetarian buffet, $5. Try the exotic rose petal yogurt drink.
Café Lotus Jl. Raya Ubud. While still one of the most beautiful settings in Ubud (in front of the royal family's clan temple and a huge lotus garden pond), the food and service are lackluster. Homemade pastas, fabulous desserts. Pricey.
Casa Luna Two floors of spacious dining with an exotic menu combining old favorites (Jungle Jim chicken and Indian potato masala) with new taste treats like focaccio, Amalfi tuna salad and paella. Just inside the entry is a bakery with fresh baked breads and cakes. Nightly movies in the back.
Griya's BBQ JI. Raya Ubud, west of the market. Sit up in the back over looking a garden, sip an ice cold beer and munch some of the best peanuts in town. Griya's is famous for its barbequed tuna, chicken and beef, and with good reason!
Jogjakarta Café JI. Monkey Forest, south of the soccer field. Fresh seafood grilled right there. Tell them to hold off on the butter if you're averse to the grease. Super cheap; nightly movies.
Mumbul's Jl. Raya Ubud, west of the market. An ice cream parlor over looking a ravine featuring an open-air patio. The obvious place to bring kids as the menu caters to young and old alike. Extensive selection of burgers and Indonesian favorites and a special kids' menu. Top it all off with a capucino freeze ice cream sundae. The Sunday brunch is an Ubud institution, less than $5.
Sai Sai Bar Jl. Monkey Forest, south of the soccer field. The hang-out for the local guys. Full bar, nightly movies.
Tut Mak Warung Kopi JI. Dewi Sita, south of the soccer field. A hang-out for the expert crowd, the salads here can't be beat and some of the best coffee in Bali is roasted here. Try the moist orange pound cake while sipping an iced caffe latte.

West of Ubud

Amandari, Sayan. Romantically overlooking the Ayung River, with superb food and service. The menu is the attraction: rack of lamb, breast of duck and seasonal seafood are all acclaimed. The desserts are divine; the cr6me brul6e and chocolate cake are outstanding. Reservations required. Major credit cards accepted-you'll need one!
Beggar's Bush Campuhan, above the bridge. An English pub in Ubud... why not? Icy cold draft beer and a convivial ambience. Victor Mason, historian, bird-watcher supremo, author and raconteur, often entertains the congregation late into the night. Highly original menu with emphasis on surf'n'turf staples.
Bridge Café Campuhan end of the bridge. With a new cook in tow, the specialty of the house is pizza.' Great view and chic interior.
Kupu Kupu Barong Kedewatan. Fabulous view from the upstairs bar: the perfect place for a romantic sunset cocktail. Unfortunately the food is average. Murni's Warung An old favorite, on the Ubud side of the Campuhan bridge. This is where the eclectic menu mix of American and Balinese favorites started in the late 1970's. The hamburger has stood the test of time and the sate, gada-gado and grilled fish are still delectable. The lower dining areas offer tranquility, with only the sound of the river to disturb the peace. Great desserts, notably the banana cream pie, strawberry yogurt pie and poppy seed cake.

North of Ubud

Kampung Café Ceking, Tegallalang. The latest in nouveau Indonesian cuisine, this gem of a place overlooks the incredible terraced rice fields of Ceking. The pastas and salads are divine and the specials of the day will knock your socks off with their innovativeness and freshness of ingredients. The chocolate brownies will keep you going all day. Service is slow, but the price is right.
Klub Kokos Café Bangkiang Sidem. A pleasant 30 minutes stroll from Ubud. Go to the Ibah Hotel, follow the "going to the Hill" sign and walk along a scenic ridge high up between two river valleys. Great place to have a drink while hiking around the hills.

South of Ubud

Café Arma JI. Pengosekan. Specializing in Italian food (the chef worked at a five-star hotel in Jakarta for years). Try the fried squid, the seafood pastas and the pizzas. Full bar. Part of the ARMA Museum complex.
Café Wayan Jl. Monkey Forest, One of the best places in town to eat. Ibu Wayan has trained in California and Thailand and the menu reflects this diversity. Specials nightly and Sunday night is a Balinese buffet for under $7. Packed at dinner, not so crowded at lunch. Death by Chocolate Cake is just that; other desserts are on the dry side.
Dian's JI. Monkey Forest. Good Javanese and Chinese fare at a modest price. Open late.
Dirty Duck Diner Padang tegal. Offers a highly creative, cheeky menu-try the Pita Hay worth or Tutor O'Neal. The specialty is crispy fried duck, a variation of a traditional Javanese recipe. Low tables with cushions create a cozy atmosphere and the food is wholesome. Local ex-pats swear by the salads, pastas and vegetarian dishes. Daily specials and a great selection of desserts.
Ibu Rai JI. Monkey Forest, opposite the soccer fid. Sea bass with herb sauce only $2. Sate is an old stand-by. Food uniformly good.
Kagemusha/Kokila Café Padang tegal. A traditional Japanese-style inn specializing in home cooked food. Great bento box-lunch as well as tonkatsu, yakitod and udon noodle soups. On a cool evening, the hot sake is fortifying, as is the Japanese green tea, o-cha.
Kokokan Club JI. Bima, Pengosekan. Mainly Thai food with a full bar downstairs and an elegant restaurant upstairs. Part of the ARMA complex. I ob Lane A. Wanara Wana (Monkey Forest Road). (free transportation in Ubud area). Newly renovated, the restaurant offers Balinese cuisine, fresh seafood, pizza and home-made pasta. Overlooks the nearby rice fields.
Ubud Raya Padangtegal. Japanese and Javanese specialties. Wholesome food done simply and well. The pumpkin or miso soups as starters compliment the tempura teriyaki and sukiyaki entrees.
Warung Teges J1. Raya Peliatan, as it opens onto fields leading to Mas. Serves either nasi campur made with pork or a nasi ayam, for $1. Clean and simple, a favorite with local taxi drivers.

East of Ubud

Bali Buddha Bagelry Opposite the main post office in Ubud. Ubud's first bagel shop with the most outrageous murals on the bakery across the street. After you pick up your mail, sit down with a cold drink (like tamarind fizz or a yogurt smoothie), a bagel smeared with sundries tomatoes and cream cheese and read a magazine. left behind by another patron. Friday night poetry readings and a bulletin board. Local deliveries made.

Sanur Area

The Bali Hyatt, The Grand Bali Beach and Sanur Beach hotels have a wide variety of restaurants, buffets, and coffee shops. The food is mostly European, but they also offer Indonesian, Chinese and Japanese cuisine.
Restaurants outside the hotels offer a greater variety of food in a broad price range. Most close at 10 pm.
The cheapest and most colorful food spat at night is the Sanur Night Market, located in the Art Market. The food is spicy, but nothing is cheaper; you can get a nasi campur for Rp3,000-Rp3,500.
For cheap, but better quality local food-the kind of place where your guides prefer to eat go to the street restaurants in Sindhu, on Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai between JI. Segara Ayu and JI. Sindhu. Try Haji Imran's (sate), Cak Muk or Depot Robby's (Chinese).
Warung Jawa Barat, on the corner of JI. Mertasari and JI. Kesumasari in Semawang, has a range of Sundanese food from Western Java, such as grilled fish, karedok (mixed raw vegetables in coconut sauce) or sate. Prices are good: between $1-$1.50.
For late-night eaters, Sanur has several moderately priced Padang restaurants open all night. 15-20 spicy dishes are laid out for you to choose from: you pay only for what you eat, so keep track. Cinto Bundo is in Batujimbar, where as Sari Bundo and Murah Meriah are in Semawang, in the midst of the red-light area.
There are two village cooperative restaurants in Sanur. Geared to tourists' palates, they have the advantage of being located right on the beach, a privilege denied to their competitors. Sanur Beach Market, at the end of Jl. Segara Ayu, is outdoors. Specialties include satay, nasi goreng, fresh grilled fish, grilled lobster; all reasonably priced. Profits from here and the nearby market go to the Sanur village foundation to run schools, clinics and art classes.
Banjar Restaurant is at the end of JI. Duyung in Semawang and offers the same range of Indonesian and Chinese food. The association also rents boats for sailing trips on the lagoon.
Simple Restaurant
Sanur's "in" place to eat is the Cafe Batujimbar in Batujimbar. Its hanging vines and sturdy furniture gives it the look of a Riviera roadside cafe. This is the haunt of the local expert colony, many of whom live in the sumptuous Batujimbar Estates just across the road. The cafe offers light, healthy food with daily specials at reasonable prices. Coffee is a specialty.
Koki, on JI. Bypass, is favored by local foreign residents. A pub atmosphere and generous servings of European-style food and billiards, make this a versatile stop.
Another simple, yet cozy place, is the Agung Restaurant just before the Semawang crossroad. For all palates, including Australian, European as well as Japanese, at under $5. A similar place, with music, is the popular J.J. on JI. Tamblingan.
Those looking for American food should try the Borneo, conveniently located among the trees of A. Sindhu. Open until 11.30 pm.
For an Irish flavor go to Tamarind restaurant and bar JI. Merta Sari (next to the British Consul) and try their sausage and mash, cottage pie and other classics from the emerald isle.

Luxury Restaurant

Some of the best places for those who want to dine in luxury are found in hotels such as La Tavema (good seafood, brick-oven pizza) and Tandjung Sari. The latter is famous for its Indonesian rijsttafel and its Balinese palace atmosphere. Dine to the strains of a bamboo tingklik orchestra while looking out over the sea, or have a drink in the seaside bar. A romantic spot for dinner by moonlight.
A few stylish places can also be found on Jl. Danau Tamblingan, including Istana Garden in Sindhu, Bayu Garden in Batujimbar and Lotus Pond ( free transportation in Sanur area), in Sindhu, which floats on a pond of lotus flowers, is decorated with antiques and serves great fresh pasta. A Royal Indonesian Buffet (Rijstafel) is available every night. If you want a pleasant Balinese
ambiance, try Gazebo's Kuri Puti, on JI. Danau Tamblingan 35, or Kul Kul, further down the road in Batujimbar. All offer similar fare and prices-menus generally feature grilled seafood. Many also stage dance performances and offer pick-up services.
Telaga Naga ("Dragon Well"), opposite of and operated by the Bali Hyatt, has the best Chinese food on Bali in the most exclusive setting: a lotus garden. Great Szechuan food. Try their chicken with dried chili peppers or the roast duck. Lenny's on JI. Bypass Ngurah Rai was the first Chinese restaurant in Sanur. It features good Indonesian/Cantonese style dishes (very fresh vegetables) at reasonable prices. Sin Bo Lan, or SBL, is a favorite of the local Chinese. Tasty spring rolls. Janur Garden, JI. Bypass Ngurah Rai, marvelous squid and shrimps. Wayang Bali, also on the bypass, offers an international menu of sizzling steaks, delicious pasta, healthy salads and sandwiches in AC comfort. Live music on Friday and Saturday nights.
Trattoria Da Marco's, in Semawang, claims to serve "the best Italian food on Bali." Their grilled fish, spaghetti carbonara, bean salad and delicious steaks prove it. Ball Moon makes marvelous lasagna.

Japanese and Korean

These restaurants cater mostly to the increasing number of Japanese tourists. Kite on J1. Danau Tamblingan offers sukiyaki, yakitori and tempura. Ryoshi on JI. Danau Tamblingan 150, is an island-wide favorite for dependable fresh sushi and typical Japanese fare. Chong Gi-Wa features all the standard Korean favorites--including kimchee and bulgogi barbequed beef in sweet soya.

Karangasem area

Candidasa sprouts new restaurants almost daily, so there are always new places to try out. Menus are similar, so we recommend only those that stand out in some way. The typical menu includes salads, Indonesian and Chinese dishes, seafood, sandwiches, and deserts. Some add steak, curry, pasta and cakes. Prices are good, averaging $4-$5/person with drinks. Seafood can be a lot more expensive. Most places close by 10 pm.
Arie Bar and Restaurant Down-to-earth, family-run establishment with a good selection of Balinese, Chinese and Western dishes. Good quality and prices that are hard to beat.
Di Mahkota . This international restaurant has a very Dutch flavor to it, serving smoked fish (salmon, herring and even eel), meatballs, croquettes, imported cold cuts and cheeses as well as more common international and Indonesian fare. Has the luxury of AC and open-air settings.
Kedai . Right on the main road as you enter Candi Dasa from the south, this very stylish Asian fusion restaurant is the perfect spot for lunch and dinner. A mouth-watering menu features crab cakes, various curries and fresh seafood.
Kubu Bali. Serves a bit of everything but excels in seafood: grilled, steamed or fried. Their open kitchen is fun to watch. Finish up with a peach melba, chilled fruit or a cognac.
Lotus Sea View (free transportation in surrounding area). Next to Toke cafe. Larger and more formal. Enjoy the sunsets and great seafood. Its location near the water gives it a Venetian flavor.
Pandan Restaurant By the beach. Well known for its Balinese buffet of babi guling (roast pork), chicken, fish, vegetable, noodles and salads. Experience this feast or sample one of the many other delicious local or Chinese dishes.
Puri Bagus Beach Hotel A good restaurant on the second story overlooking the sea. Great seafood.
Rama Bungalows and Restaurant Has added Swiss dishes such as Roschti, Kartoffel and Puffer Mitgemuse to an already good menu.
TJ's Cafe . Has the best grilled fish, stuffed baked potatoes and salads around. Elegant open pavilions overlook a carp pond.
Toke Cafe Near the bend in the road. Opens to the beach on one side and to the main road on the other. Offers the best combination of Balinese ambience and Western intimacy. Great welcoming drink and good pasta for a couple of dollars.
Warung Ibu Rusmini has the best nasi campur (mixed vegetables, tempe and chicken with rice) in town for under $1, plus other simple local dishes.

Padangbai

A few small restaurants are scattered around Padangbai. Topi Inn's attractive sandy floor restaurant serves a wide range of food and is famous for its fried fish prepared by the owner herself. Pantai Ayu Restaurant, right on the beach, is always full. Chinese and seafood dishes. The pleasant English-speaking manager lbu Komang presents you with small gifts a krupuk udang to welcome you and a cute out rigger souvenir to take home. She has also a few rooms for rent: $2.50-$10.

Tirtagangga

Kusuma Jaya and Warung Rijasa serve Indonesian dishes such as mie goreng (fried noodles) or nasi goreng (fried rice) for $1.
Warung Tirtawati has a selection of delicious Indonesian food; their mie goreng is a delight, and a bargain at under $1.50. Both Good Karma and Tirta Ayu Homestay serve a wider selection of Indonesian and Chinese meals.

Several warung and restaurants are in a little shopping arcade in front of the water palace.

Gangga Café serves pizza, Indian, vegetarian, and homemade yogurt.
Puri Sawah's menu includes all kinds of baguette sandwiches, many salads, baked potatoes with various fillings, and baked goods.

Amblapura

Restaurant Lenny Associated with the Pandan Restaurant in Candidasa, has a wide selection of quality Indonesian and Chinese food.
Warung Manggis Behind the berrio center. Excellent Indonesian food. Under $2 a meal.

Buleleng area

The Taman Lila complex on J1. A. Yani has a row of restaurants serving mostly Chinese food. Best known are the Gandhi restaurant, No. 25H, with an extensive menu and moderate prices. Try the nasi goreng kepiting (fried rice crab) or the shrimp sate. Just beside Gandhi is Kartika, No. 251. Further west are two intimate restaurants frequented by local lovers: Cafetaria 99 and next door, Arina.

Kintamani

The better places are attached to the hotels in Penelokan up on the calderas and down in Toya Bungkah by the hot springs. Penelokan has choices ranging from very simple and cheap places with good local food to big fancy restaurants, which cater to tour groups from the expensive hotels on the coast.
The local lake fish is a tasty variety called be mujahir, available fried or grilled. It's best fried crisp-more of the fish is edible.
A good place for lunch (and one of the few on the rim open for evening meals) is the Lakeview. Prices here are moderate, but they are geared up for tour group buffet lunches.
The Batur Garden Restaurant has an interesting menu of Chinese and Indonesian dishes, as well as Western bar drinks. Friendly and reasonably priced. Lunch only.
Gunawan Restaurant is very popular with a great view on the edge of the crater. There are many other giant, palatial restaurants on the other side of the street, but most overlook South Bali. Buffet or menu. Great mujahir soup. Approx. Rp 7000 per entree; buffet $4.50, plus 21% tax.
Down in the crater at Toya Bungkah, most losmen have small restaurants (warung), and new eating places are springing up all the time. Our recommendation is Nyoman Mawa's Under The Volcano. His lake fish with homemade sambal matah is worth the trip to the mountains alone.

Tabanan

There are only a few restaurants in Bedugul but they do cover a wide price range. Opposite the road leading up to the botanical gardens, on a right hand bend, there are three small eating-places serving cheap meals from 6 am to 7 pm. A good meal costs around $1. Try the farnes (sayur pakul at Ananda I. Friendly service.
There are good restaurants in the main hotels: The Bedugul Hotel's restaurant by the lake serves meals costing around $5. Try the Chinese food at Pacung, especially their crab fried rice (nasi goreng kepiting). The Bali Handara's Kamandalu Restaurant is more up market. Strawberry Hill serves tasty Indonesian favorites, soups, fresh salads, steaks, and fish. On chilly days and evenings savor a drink at Bedugul's only bar beside a log fire. Managed by the owners of Poppies in Kuta.
Indonesian food is available in front of Ulun Danu temple in small food stalls-not recommended for those with sensitive stomachs. Overlooking the temple and a big banyan tree is the Perama Tea House, a small restaurant by the lake. The open-air patio is a pleasant spot for a refreshing cup of tea. Try their pisang bakar Candikuning grilled banana with grated cheese on top.
Ayam Bakar Taliwang Bersaudara is just before the famous Ulun Danu temple and has a view over the temple and the lake. A favorite with locals. The spicy hot dishes from Lombok are just right for the cold weather. Order the sate or tofu if you don't like food too spicy. $2. Jember Indah is on the higher slopes just outside Bedugul. Cheap east Javanese food and beautiful views down to the sea. Try the soto Madura for $2. Minang Saiyo, in front of Candi Kuning market, sells spicy Sumatran Padang fare.

Tanah Lot

Recommended are Dewi Sinta Restaurant at the hotel of the same name and Bali Lastri Restaurant. Several upscale dining outlets are at Le Meridien Resort and Nirwana Golf Club.

Nusa Dua area

The Nusa Dua complex has many international restaurants (with international prices) in the five star hotels.

A 7-course French meal at the chic Semeru Rotisserie in the Putri Bali costs $55/person.
All hotels hold theme buffet dinners featuring Balinese dance for $30-$40/person.
The Galeria area offers Spanish, Indonesian, Balinese, Italian, Korean, Thai, Swiss-German, Chinese, Japanese, and Western cuisines.
Try Warung Bali to taste some local flavor
Sendok Restaurant for a variety of international dishes and Escargot for French cuisine.
For fresh spicy seafood, try the Jala-Jala restaurant in the new Nikko Bali hotel.
For excellent Japanese food including sushi and teppanyaki, the Matsuri Japanese Restaurant
next to the Galleria Shopping Complex, is a must. For cheaper food and more natural surroundings, head for the village of Bualu just outside the resort.
Outside the main gate to the right is the big Lotus Garden (free transportation in Nusa Dua area) restaurant which serves fesh, homemade pasta, grilled seafood and steaks.
If you like spicy West Sumatran food, try Mega Meriah Padang on JI. Bypass Ngurah Rai. The best price-quality deal,
though, is the Ulam Restaurant
just outside the gate facing the Hilton. The specialty is the seafood basket for $8 per person. It's a favorite haunt of ministers and celebrities.
Kuta's popular Poco Loco Mexican food has opened a branch at JI. Pantai Mengiat.
Also on JI. Pantai Mengiat is the Nyoman Beer Garden with its extensive international menu, featuring great pasta and fresh seafood.
Finally, if you decide to go native and eat for a dollar, there's a sate stall near the main entrance, or try the bakso Solo (meatball soup) at the night market in front of the local movie theater.

The Tanjung Benoa area has an increasing number of good restaurants.

Near the peninsula tip, the sumptuous Beluga Watersport Complex is a hull shaped restaurant renowned for its r1jsttafel, only $10/person.
The beach side Rai restaurant features lobster and fresh fish grilled to perfection.
For good European fare and pizza, dine at Novotel Benoa.
At the southern end, across from Club Mad (and a favorite of its staff), is the Casanova Italian restaurant.
For Indonesian food, Bambu Indah has a good reputation among locals.
More upscale but excellent quality is Pasar Senggol, nightly at Grand Hyatt Bali. For $37, all you can eat of a variety of Indonesian fare from vendor carts and stalls, plus an excellent dance performance.
